As a seasoned traveler I have visited many great places around the world but one of my absolute favourite cities has to be New York. I don’t know what it is about this amazing city but it has an energy and vibrancy that you just don’t find anywhere else.
No matter how many times you go you will always discover new places, new people and new experiences. It’s like visiting for the first time over and over again. Whether you go in the spring/summer months and experience the buzz and excitement in the heated city or you visit in the autumn/winter months and be wowed by the spectacular Christmas displays – New York never disappoints!
So what makes this city so great? Well, here are five reasons why I love New York and why I think you will to.
1. The People
I don’t think I have ever visited New York and not met at least a handful of amazing people. Whether it’s standing in the queue waiting for a ticket for the subway, the service in a restaurant or sitting on a bench in Central Park, the people in New York are vibrant, friendly and happy.
Now I know it does have its issues like any other big city but I have never once felt threatened or unsafe whilst there and I have travelled there so many times on my own. People are happy to stop and help you if you need directions and because of the diversity of the city, anyone can fit in and all are welcome.
2. The Energy
There are very few cities that can compete with the energy of New York. It has a special energy of its own. Coming from London I know how fast paced living in a city can be, but New York is on another level!
When you leave the airport and head into Manhattan you can feel the energy rise. From the amazing skyscrapers which tower over you to the crazy New York cab drivers who think they’re Formula 1 drivers – you need to get ready for the ride (literally!). This is definitely a city which never sleeps and the hustle and bustle of the people and the traffic make this the perfect place to live life to the full.
3. Sightseeing
You will be inundated with glorious sights from the Empire State Building to the Statue of Liberty, from Wall Street to The Brooklyn Bridge and from Grand Central Station to Central Park – New York has it all! No matter how long you stay there you will always need to book another visit to cover all the amazing places to visit.
No matter what your preference, there is something for everyone. You can spend some time in one of the many museums or parks or why not walk along The High Line, join the throngs of tourists at Times Square or do what I did on a recent visit and take some time to reflect at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
4. Food
Food is the catalyst that brings people together and New York has so much to offer when it comes to food. Great food can be found in the strangest places – from Michelin-star restaurants to local deli’s – there is something for everyone and for every taste bud.
I mentioned before about the diversity of the people in New York and with that brings an abundance of fabulous food. My go to place for a great breakfast is always Pershing Square and on my last visit I recently came across a great Korean steakhouse called Cote and a French brasserie called Augustine in the financial district which was also amazing.
5. Shopping
And last but by no means least, of course the shopping! I remember the days when we used to be able to get $2 for £1 and even though those days may have long gone, a strong exchange rate still allows us Brits to bag a bargain.
There are the obvious places to shop like 5th Avenue but don’t forget to check out Soho which have some amazing shops and a really cool New York vibe. On my most recent trip I decided to search for some thrift, vintage and consignment stores. It was definitely an experience and a couple of my favourite stores were Cure Thrift Shop and The Real Real so make sure you check those out if you’re looking for a bargain.
There is no where like New York. It offers such variety and is a place of inspiration and excitement. There is so much to see and do that you will never be bored. Whether you just want to wander the cobbled streets in Soho, take a ride on the subway, visit a Broadway show or dine in one of the many amazing restaurants, New York is enthralling and truly is a beautiful city which never sleeps.
I would love to know if you have ever visited New York? If so, what did you enjoy about it the most?
