As a woman over 40 I have come to the realisation that the older I get the harder it is to lose the weight that has been creeping on over the last few years. It was not so long along that I could eat whatever I wanted and still fit into my size 10 jeans and even though I have lost some weight over the last few months one of the things I love about jeans is that there is a size, colour and style that can make you look good.

I know that when I look good I feel good and feel more confident and one of the things I love about fashion is that there are no rules – anything goes! I have always loved dressing up and have never been shy of wearing bright colours but one of my favourite items in my wardrobe are my denim jeans.

I LOVE wearing jeans! I love the versatility of them – you can dress them up and down and they can look good on everyone. They are the one item I wear the most and I just love flicking through Instagram and seeing pictures of how women have styled them.

Over the last few months I’ve really been inspired to create a capsule wardrobe of key pieces which I can mix and match for all occasions and owning a few pairs of jeans is so important. You may have to search for your ideal fit but I promise – it is out there. Yes you can follow trends but if there’s something out there that just doesn’t suit you then don’t buy it. I have tried on so many pairs of jeans that I’ve seen in magazines but they just look terrible on me. Know your identity and style and stick to it.

As I said before, as we get older our body will change and it’s important to work with that change and not against it. Don’t let other people dictate to you what you should and shouldn’t wear. I love being inspired by people but I’ve realised that what they are wearing looks amazing on them because they are super slim but it just wouldn’t look that great on me but I can still find a way to incorporate their style but in my own way.

When you’re not quite sure what to put on you know you can always throw on some jeans and pair them with a simple t-shirt and trainers for a casual look or dress them up by adding a nice blouse and a pair of heels (and it doesn’t hurt if the heels happen to be Chanel to add even more glamour!).

It’s all about creating your own personal style and finding what works for you. I used to hate being tall. I remember being picked on when I was at school because of my height but I have to say now I love it. You certainly get noticed when you’re tall and when you walk with confidence (no matter your height) it can definitely turn heads.

However, it can have its downsides in that trying to find the right trouser length can be a challenge. I remember years ago when there were hardly any options for women who were tall but that’s all changed. You can now find all different jean lengths and shapes to fit any size and height – it’s great!

As a ‘mature’ woman I like to think that I am comfortable and confident in the way I look (even though I do have many ‘off’ days and wish my thighs were slimmer and my belly flatter!) and there’s nothing wrong in playing around with different styles. Ultimately it’s all about knowing what suits your body type and what makes you feel bold, brave and beautiful.
